  • Dr William Kalema (Country Managing Director, BDO East African Advisory Services, Uganda)

Judging process

Judges will develop criteria for each category. After entries are received and catalogued, the awards secretariat will screen entries so as to ensure submissions match the initial entry requirements, such as word count, and provide sufficient supporting material. Once screened, shortlisted entries will be sent to the judges who will select a winning project and runner-up in each category.

The secretariat will facilitate a conference call with the judging panel and chairman to decide the winner of each category. The entry that receives the most votes in each category will be the winner. Runner-up entries will be recognised as highly commended during the awards ceremony. If necessary, the chairperson will exercise the deciding vote.

Judging criteria

Above all, the judges will be looking for quantitative and qualitative results. It is important, therefore, that companies explain how success is measured and provide (where possible) hard data, such as numbers of people impacted and return on investment. As a preliminary criterion, each entry should be able to demonstrate best practice corporate governance in business operations and decisions. Please remember, the financial size of the project is not the important criterion, but rather, whether it can be considered successful. The judges will also consider the clarity, structure and presentation of each submission, and the creativity and effectiveness of the solution.
