The East African CSR Awards are the first of their kind, celebrating excellent corporate social responsibility by Burundi, Kenyan, Rwandan,Tanzanian and Ugandan businesses.
The inaugural East African CSR Awards 2010 will showcase and reward East African companies that go beyond compliance with legalrequirements to integrate social and environmental values into their business management strategies.
The aim of the awards will be to clarify good CSR practice by recognising what constitutes best-in-class CSR programmes. Companieswill be rewarded for outstanding and innovative initiatives that create a high social and environmental benefit for the community and thebusiness. The awards will showcase an East African private sector that has succeeded economically, whilst safeguarding environmentaland social values.
The concept was born out of an acute awareness that corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities have increased substantially over thepast decade in East Africa. Consequently, there has been an encouraging debate about what constitutes for good CSR and how it can actas a positive force for the region’s social, environmental and economic development. It is not the first time that awards have beengranted for good CSR practice in developing countries. The Asian CSR Awards, Arabia CSR Awards and the Malaysian Prime Minister’sCSR Awards, for example, were all established several years ago.
It is time for the world to recognise the contribution East African businesses have made to the region’s sustainable development.
