The prestigious VIP awards ceremony which took place on 4th May in Southern Sun Hotel, Dar es Salaam, alongside the World Economic Forum, gave formal recognition of outstanding and world-class CSR initiatives by East African companies. The ceremony was opened by Mr Keli Kiilu, Vice Chairman of the East African Business Council, followed by a speech from the headline sponsor’s CEO, Mr Sanjeev Kumar of Bank M Tanzania.
The key note address was made by the Honourable Minister of Trade, Industry, and Marketing, Dr Mary Nagu who stated:
‘These awards highlight the benefits that a fruitful and long-lasting partnership between the government, the private sector and our communities can bring for the region’s social, environmental and economic development.’
The VIP audience included the Kenyan High Commissioner to Tanzania (H.E. Mutinda Mutiso), Director of the Tanzanian Business Council (Mr Dan Mrutu) and senior executives of shortlisted companies including Microsoft, Safaricom, Zain and Tullow Oil.
A winner and a highly commended submission was announced for each of the categories with winners receiving certificates from representatives of Bank M and category award sponsors, Dow Chemical East Africa.
Chairman of both the judging panel and the awards secretariat, africapractice Tanzania, Mr Elvis Musiba, commented:
‘The entries we received in this first year were of an excellent standard, making the judging process a very difficult one. I congratulate the worthy winners but would also recognise all the companies who entered - it is a testament to the passion with which East African businesses are fostering good business practice and contributing positively to our communities’.

- Highly commended: Safaricom Foundation for the ‘The Safaricom Foundation World of Difference Project’
Most Ethical & responsible Business Practice for Supply Chains:
- Winner: Sandali Wood Industries Limited for ‘Responsible Chain Of Custody’
- Highly commended: Nile Breweries Limited for ‘"From Grain to Glass" - reducing HIV/AIDS in Our Supply Chains
Environmental Excellence:
- Winner: Eastern Produce Kenya Limited for ‘EPK Sustainable Environmental Management Program’
- Highly commended: Unilever Tea Tanzania Ltd for ‘Indigenous Forest Conservation’
Most Sustainable & Scalable Community Investment — Sponsored by Dow Chemical East Africa Ltd
- Winner: Tullow Uganda Operations Pty Ltd for the ‘Tullow Kaiso-Tonya Programme’
- Highly commended: Mabati Rolling Mills for the ‘Mabati rolling Mills (MRM) Project’
